Smart Value Power Program

More control. More environmental benefits.
More savings!

If you have a smart meter, our Smart Value Power program
is a way to get more — without reducing the overall amount of
electricity you use.

It’s simple and it’s sensible. By shifting your use of electricity to the lower-priced Value Hours, you may be able to better control your costs, save money, and help the environment by reducing peak-time carbon emissions. During peak hours — Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. — electricity tends to cost more to produce and may require the use of less-efficient generation facilities to meet system peaks. If you are able to use less energy during higher-priced Peak Hours — the mc² Smart Value Power program is the right plan for you! Of course, you never pay more than ComEd’s rates with our mc² Price Protection Guarantee — that’s being a smart consumer.

Timing is everything with mc² Smart Value Power!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Smart Value Power program?

The mc² Smart Value Power program is a time-of-use electricity pricing program for residential customers with smart meters. Your monthly electricity bill is calculated using separate pricing for electricity used during Value Hours and Peak Hours, respectively. mc² Smart Value Power customers are guaranteed to never pay more than ComEd rates with the mc² Price Protection Guarantee.

What is the mc² Price Protection Guarantee?

At the end of your contract term, we guarantee that you will not pay more for electricity than if you had otherwise stayed with ComEd’s basic electricity supply during the same period. Each month, your bill will illustrate your cumulative program savings when compared to ComEd’s tariff rates. By shifting your electric usage to lower-priced Value Hours, you have an opportunity to reduce your energy costs and help the environment — without reducing the overall amount of electricity you use. If, however, your savings is negative at the end of your contract term, mc² will provide a credit for the difference on your 12th billing cycle. Note that the guarantee will not apply if you terminate your contract prior to the end of your contract term.

What does Cumulative Program Savings mean?

The mc² Price Protection Guarantee (described above) ensures that you will never pay more than if you had otherwise stayed with ComEd’s basic electricity supply. Each month, your ComEd bill will illustrate your “Cumulative Program Savings”, which compares the mc² Smart Value Power prices to ComEd’s tariff rates. If your cumulative program savings is a positive dollar amount — you’re saving money on the program. Depending on the time of year you started the program, you may initially see a negative savings. Over the course of the year, by shifting your electricity usage to lower-priced Value Hours, you should see a positive savings. However, if your savings is negative at the end of your contract term, mc² will provide a credit for the difference on your 12th billing cycle. Note that the guarantee will not apply if you terminate your contract prior to the end of your contract term.

How long do I have to stay on the program and are there any fees?

Program participants enroll in the program for a 12-month term. There are no signup fees and no early termination fees. If you remain in the program for at least 12 consecutive monthly billing periods, you will be eligible for the mc² Price Protection Guarantee.

What are the environmental benefits from being in the Smart Value Power program?

Participants in the Smart Value Power program can help the environment by controlling and shifting use of electricity to the lower-priced Value Hours. By shifting your electricity use, you help reduce carbon emissions from less-efficient generation facilities that contribute to global warming.

What is a smart meter?

Smart meter installations are part of ComEd’s efforts to modernize the electrical system by upgrading existing meters with digital electric meters. Smart meters use two-way communication to collect energy usage information, allowing mc² to provide additional pricing plans that reflect how and when you use electricity.

How do I know if I have a smart meter?

If you have a smart meter, your 9-digit meter number on your ComEd bill will start with the number “2”. To locate your meter number on your ComEd bill, click here. ComEd customers in 21 local communities already have smart meters installed. Click here to see if your community already has smart meters.

How can I get a smart meter?

ComEd is systematically installing smart meters to all its customers over the next few years and expects to complete all installations by 2021. Click here to see when ComEd plans to deploy smart meters in your community.

How can I save money on the Smart Value Power program?

The more you can shift electricity use to the lower-priced Value Hours, the more you can save on the mc² Smart Value Power program. For example, use your vacuum, air conditioner, laundry machines, dishwasher, chargers, and other appliances during Value Hours. Keep unnecessary lighting and appliances turned off during higher-priced Peak Hours.

When are Value Hours and Peak Hours?

Value Hours are from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on Monday through Friday, and for 24 hours on weekends. Peak Hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

How will I be billed?

You will continue to get one bill from ComEd. The mc² Smart Value Power charges will be included in the Electricity Supply Services portion of your ComEd bill. ComEd will continue to bill you for Distribution Services and Taxes.

Program participants will see the following charges in the Electricity Supply Services section of their ComEd bill:

  • Peak Energy Supply Charge (Energy charge calculation based on Peak Hours used)
  • Off-Peak Energy Supply Charge (Energy charge calculation based on Value Hours used)
  • Transmission Charge (ComEd pass-through charge)
  • Capacity Charge (ComEd pass-through charge)
  • Cumulative Program Savings (Calculated savings when compared to ComEd Rates)
What are Transmission and Capacity Charges?

Transmission and Capacity Charges are pass-through charges from ComEd without a mark-up from mc². The Smart Value Power program billing is different from the standard fixed-price option in that mc² lists the Transmission and Capacity Charges as a separate line items on the ComEd bill.

Transmission Charge: ComEd purchases transmission services from regional markets regulated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The Transmission Charge is a pass-through charge from ComEd.

Capacity Charge: The Capacity Charge covers ComEd’s costs to reserve enough electricity to meet demand at all times, including peak hours. The Capacity Charge is a pass-through charge from ComEd.
