The National Weather Service is forecasting extremely high temperatures combined with humidity across the Midwest for the next several days. To that end, we recommend the following tips and suggestions for successfully managing through this event:
- Drink lots of water and natural juices; avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee and sodas.
- Avoid going outside in extreme heat for prolonged periods.
- If you don’t have air conditioning, keep shades drawn and blinds closed, but windows slightly open.
- Keep electric lights off or turned down.
- Minimize use of your oven and stove.
- Wear loose, light, cotton clothing.
- Take cool baths and showers.
- Don’t leave anyone (including pets) in a parked car, even for a few minutes.
- Know the symptoms of heat illness/heat stroke.
- Check on the elderly, sick & those without air conditioning.
- Call your local municipality for information on cooling centers located within your community.
